Abstract

This study proposes guidelines for index investment. The study uses description method and collects data from the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and other sources for analysis. There are several advantages of investment with index replication strategy such as low risk in investment. In addition, when investors with little experiences use this kind of strategy in investment, they could expect the returns better than expert investors did. Empirical data show that half of skilled fund managers generate returns lower than an index fund. Economics theory supporting such empirical data is the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH). The Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) states that current stock prices reflect all available information that determine those stock prices and delivering higher returns than the stock market as a whole in the long run is technically impossible without seeking investment with higher-risk adjustment. Lower deposit saving rates and stock price volatility in the SET make index investing more preferable. However, investment by index replication should be applied along with long-term investment. In addition, investors should diverse their portfolio by adjusting individual’s risk.
